    Put your best foot forward on social media

    IN TODAY'S digital age, your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts are not just social media platforms - they can also function as character references for employers.

    "I think we should all assume, or even expect, that social media monitoring by employers does happen," said Madeline Ernest, a senior consultant at management development and training company Training Edge International.

    "Your personal brand now extends onto the online space. What you share online is not private - it can be accessed. Social media definitely has a role to play in the corporate world - it's akin to a character reference in some way," she said.

    Ms Ernest advised employees to avoid making posts that are politically, racially or religiously charged.

    "Stay clear of topics that can be viewed as having discriminatory content," she added. "Your social media account is not the right platform to post your grievances with previous employers, acquaintances or even neighbours."

    While it is important to be vigilant in monitoring one's online presence, there is no set formula to follow, said Ms Ernest, who is speaking at My Paper's Advance Education Series seminar on Oct 18.

    Whether you enjoy sharing your views on philosophy, celebrity news or fashion trends, what is important is to give your opinion in a responsible and objective manner, she said.

    "The key is to steer clear of being a keyboard warrior or wrongly thinking that the perceived anonymity will protect you should you post a malicious or defamatory statement about anyone," said Ms Ernest.

    She will be sharing more in her talk about recognising the importance of one's brand at the seminar, which will be held at Singapore Press Holdings' News Centre Auditorium in Toa Payoh.

    Other speakers at the seminar include Desmond Chow, managing director of Style Resumes and managing partner of Asia Expat Guides. He will be speaking on how to get out of the rat race.

    Khyati Kapai, managing director and principal consultant of Yzer Solutions and a corporate trainer at Kaplan, will be talking about how to be in control of one's work.

    Another speaker, Raymond Chua, founder and director of Datong Energy and a corporate trainer at Kaplan, will speak on understanding business analytics and market insights.
