Pangdemonium wins big at Life! Theatre Awards
THE biggest winner at the 14th annual Life! Theatre Awards yesterday was theatre company Pangdemonium, whose musical about dealing with mental illness, Next To Normal, bagged both the Production of the Year and Production of the Year (Readers' Choice) awards.
The latter award, which is sponsored by OCBC Bank, is decided by an online poll, and readers who cast their vote stood a chance to win a night's stay at The St Regis Singapore, as well as dinner for two at the hotel's restaurant, Brassiere Les Saveurs.
The prize, worth $1,330, was won by Mr Marcus Lee, 22, who is a full-time national serviceman.
Pangdemonium also picked up the Best Actor prize for Adrian Pang in Rabbit Hole, a heartrending drama about a family coming to terms with the loss of a child.
The Best Actress award went to Edith Podesta, for her role in experimental play Illogic, which required the actress to portray several characters.
Theatre company Nine Years Theatre also did well, with its Mandarin adaptation of the American courtroom drama Twelve Angry Men winning four of the 12 awards, including Best Director for Nelson Chia and Best Supporting Actor for Johnny Ng.
The production also took top honours in the Best Ensemble and Best Set Design categories.
Writer Alfian Sa'at won the prize for Best Original Script for his Malay play, Kakak Kau Punya Laki (Your Sister's Husband).
The awards, including the top award of Production of the Year, were judged by a six-member panel.
