Ellen's Oscar selfie crashes Twitter
ACADEMY Awards host Ellen DeGeneres' impromptu selfie set a record for the most-retweeted post and temporarily disrupted Twitter's service.
During the ceremony, DeGeneres went into the audience to take a picture with Meryl Streep.
She was quickly surrounded by other actors, like Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Spacey, Jared Leto and Lupita Nyong'o. Cooper took the photo with DeGeneres' smartphone.
"If only Bradley's arm was longer," the host posted. "Best photo ever."
The post was retweeted more than 536,000 times within half an hour. Twitter was disabled momentarily for some users and the post quickly broke the record for most-retweeted post.
"We crashed and broke Twitter," DeGeneres said later from the stage. "We made history."
The selfie was retweeted more than 1.4 million times in less than 11/2 hours, surpassing the previous record set by President Barack Obama after he won re-election in 2012. The tweet Four More Years was retweeted 781,000 times.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which presented the awards, took credit for the disruption.
"Sorry, our bad," the academy said on its Twitter account.
