Becoming Beyonce, The Untold Story (Non-Fiction)

    : J. Randy Taraborrelli

    Rating: 2.5/5

    The story:

How one of the world's greatest artists, Beyonce Knowles, got to where she is now.

THIS book is a collection of stories from the singer's humble beginning as a wide-eyed little girl with big dreams to the bigger-than-life persona that she is today.

She is undoubtedly one of the top names in the music industry today, with 20 Grammy awards under her belt and having sold more than 160 million records as a solo singer and member of the group Destiny's Child.

She is married to Jay Z, one of the most successful rappers in the business, and they have a daughter.

In a nutshell, it seems that Beyonce got to have the cake, eat it whole and not have a single calorie stick to her hips. Be jealous folks, be very jealous.

But is her life really all as fine and dandy as we witness it on the red carpet and through her social media accounts?

    According to biographer Taraborrelli, no.

From her father's love child scandal, to her less-than-stellar acting career and miscarriage, Beyonce has had her fair share of drama and heartbreaks.

When her Dreamgirls co-star, Jennifer Hudson, was not only nominated for her first Oscar but also won Best Supporting Actress in 2010, Beyonce was reportedly embarrassed and devastated.

When rumours began to swirl that her husband was cheating on her with then up-and-coming singer Rihanna, she gave him an ultimatum.

And when her father broke her mother's heart after years of standing by him through thick and thin, she let him go as her manager.

Somehow, Taraborrelli seems to have all the insider details that the tabloid and gossip columns have missed.

The so-called direct quotes and conversations that the people have in the book seem too good to be true, though.

In the source notes, the author does credit a great number of people who went out of their way to assist with the book. In other words, the telltales who want their 15 minutes of fame.

It is noted that friends, relatives, journalists, socialites, lawyers, celebrities and business associates of the Knowles family were contacted in putting the book together. Taraborrelli and his research team also scoured pages of articles pertaining to the artiste who is known for her fierce stance on privacy.

Beyonce's policy to not air her dirty laundry in public was evident during the 2014 incident dubbed "Elevator-gate".

Security footage from inside a lift showed Beyonce's sister, Solange, violently attacking Jay Z. Instead of trying to stop her sister or protect her husband, she just stood silently at the side, more worried that the security guard was stepping on the train of her dress.

So why did Solange hit her brother-in-law? Taraborrelli reveals the reason in this book, though it is not verified by Beyonce or her management.

Still, it is interesting to read about the events that supposedly happened in this public yet private person's life.

If you're a fan of this icon of female power, Becoming Beyonce tells you how she got there and, boy, the ride sure wasn't easy.
