ENTERTAINMENT news website TMZ, which posted images of what it said was Angelina Jolie's filing for divorce from Brad Pitt, reported unconfirmed claims that the actress filed the papers over the actor's consumption of alcohol and marijuana and anger issues.
Jolie, 41, filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, citing irreconcilable differences, court documents showed.
She sought full physical custody of their six children with visitation rights for Pitt, 52, but did not seek spousal support.
The separation date was cited as Sept 15.
On Tuesday night, with the announcement of the split, the hashtag #Brangelina quickly became the top trending item on Twitter - with roughly 720 mentions per minute, according to analytics firm Zoomph.
Jolie's estranged father, actor Jon Voight, told Inside Edition: "It's very sad. Something very serious must have happened for Angelina to make a decision like this."
Peter Walzer, a California attorney who represented actress Katie Holmes in her divorce from Tom Cruise, said it was unusual Jolie sought sole physical custody of the children. It was equivalent to saying Pitt was not competent to be a parent.
"It's an insult," Walzer said.
TMZ said Pitt was "furious" at Jolie for allegedly spinning the story about him being a risky parent, and for turning their family into prime paparazzi targets.
Quoting unnamed sources, TMZ said he had pleaded with Jolie to handle the divorce "like adults".
He wanted a low-key split for the benefit of the children.
After her high-profile filing, he was reported to have said: "She's just unleashed hell."
The Daily Mail stated that the couple's home is now surrounded by photographers, with the Los Angeles Police Department patrolling the area.
As for parenting styles, People Magazine had reported, citing a source, that Pitt is the stricter parent who wanted to set rules, while Jolie is more relaxed and "never yells".
Similarly, a source told Daily Mail that while working on her latest film First They Killed My Father in Cambodia, Jolie allowed her kids to "run wild".
Rumours of Pitt having an affair with co-star Marion Cotillard while filming Allied, a World War II romance, surfaced in the wake of the divorce filing. But they were apparently refuted by sources.
Still, it did not help that the movie's trailer, featuring Pitt and the sultry French actress as assassins who fall in love, was released on the same day as the shock divorce announcement.
Pitt and Jolie began dating in 2005, after meeting on the set of Mr And Mrs Smith, about a married couple who learn they are both assassins tasked to kill each other.
They have three adopted children - Maddox, 15; Pax, 12; and Zahara, 11.
They also have three biological children - Shiloh, 10, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 8.
