More bookshops shut in Taiwan
MORE than 400 brick and mortar bookstores in Taiwan have gone out of business in the last 10 years, according
to recent data released
by the Ministry of Finance.
To the dismay of local
book lovers, the Zheng Da Bookstore shut its decade-old National Taiwan University store in February.
The news marks the latest closure, including those of major book retailers - notably, the recent closing of Page One's Taipei 101 branch, Kingstone's Zhongxiao store and Eslite's Tianmu branch.
According to MOF statistics on book and magazine retailers, there are currently 2,192 physical bookstores nationwide, as of February this year.
The number is a drop of 15.8 per cent, compared
with the figure in 2007.
