Appetite for Korean ramen to set record
WITH the popularity of South Korean-made ramen continuing to rise, the amount of exports is expected to reach an all-time high, the Korea Customs Service (KCS) said.
From January to August this year, exports of ramen reached US$175 million (S$240.5 million) this year, marking a 26.5 per cent hike from the same period last year.
At this rate, the total amount by the year's end
is expected to reach
about US$263 million.
Of this year's total so far, US$27,000 worth of exports were made via e-commerce, marking a whopping
2,324.5 per cent rise from the same period last year.
The top three export destinations were China,
the United States and Japan, followed by
Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Localised taste and ingredients to cater to
other markets such as
those in South-east Asia
and the Middle East have also led to a jump in
exports, the KCS said.
