Power up with a pre-workout snack
THE best snacks are those that energise the body.
International Herald Tribune (IHT) recently published a list of healthful snacks that one can eat just before hitting the gym.
Packed with nutrients, these are great for getting you powered up for that workout:
Lack of sodium is one of the main causes of muscle cramps, but bananas, which are high in potassium, help reduce the risk.
Have a brown-bread sandwich before hitting the gym. Some of the best spreads are almond butter and marmalade, which provide a good balance of protein, carbohydrates and necessary fat, said IHT.
YOGHURT AND BERRIES
Berries, paired with a bowl of low-fat yoghurt, are an excellent source of nutrients. The IHT article noted that they work together to help protect muscles from free-radical damage caused by excessive exercise.
Almonds are considered a great pre-workout snack as they contain 15 essential nutrients, including vitamin E, potassium, fibre and calcium. According to research, almonds do not contain as much calories as believed.
